VMware Workstation is fairly easy to set up and get running. You can download the main installation file from www.vmware.com, and it should be fairly straightforward to run this executable on Windows Vista or later, Mac OS X 10.13 (High Sierra) or later, or Linux (x86-64). Though there are a few different types of VMware packs available for download, we’ll focus on the portable version for this page. The pack is still relatively hefty for a portable program, but it’s just right to fit on a USB stick that you can pass around easily. Note: VMware Workstation 11 requires Microsoft Windows 7 or later, Mac OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) or later, or Linux (x86-64). The following instructions are NOT compatible with previous versions of VMware Workstation. Download the VMware Workstation .zip file from www.vmware.com and extract all files to a temporary folder on your hard drive. The VMware Workstation icon should now be accessible via your Windows Start menu or Mac Launchpad icon. To start the program, either click on the icon to execute the executable (Windows) or double-click on the VMWare icon (Mac). If you’re running VMware Workstation for the first time, you’ll be prompted to enter your license key. You can find this key online at www.vmware.com by creating an account and then accessing "My Products". Copy and paste this key into the text box, which is now available after pressing OK. VMware Workstation now runs as a portable version, meaning all configuration settings are stored in the application directory rather than in system directories. Workstation also checks for updates online, so it’s always best to run the program while connected to the Internet. Close VMware Workstation by either exiting the program or pressing Alt+F4 (Windows) or Esc (Mac). If you’d like to uninstall VMware Workstation, simply delete all files of this installation. What is VMware Player? It is a product that enables you to run virtual machines of operating systems on your computer. It is not an emulator like VirtualBox, but it does enable users with older computers (by today's standards) to be able to run multiple virtual machines simultaneously. It also enables you to run the same operating system in a virtual machine and on a physical computer at the same time, which can be handy for testing new software. What’s New in VMware Player 5? The latest version of VMware Player is Version 5, which includes a redesigned user interface. It also supports several new capabilities introduced with ESX 4.0 and ESXi 4.0, such as:Version 4 is basically the same program as Version 3, but has been updated to add support for 64-bit guest operating systems running on 64-bit host systems when they are running vSphere (not when they’re running plain old ESX 3). cfa1e77820
